The Benefits of Hiring a Wedding Videographer

If you are a bride (or groom) that is on the fence about wedding videography, you have come to the right place! In this blog, we will discuss the reasons why videography is ABSOLUTELY worth the extra space in your wedding budget. We caught up with Engaged vendor, Bright & Gray Creative (Jason Morales; formerly known as A Morales Production), to discuss the the many benefits of having a videographer there to capture your special day! Below, you will see our Q&A with Jason, which includes video answers! He is AMAZING; we love the time and effort that he put into this post with us (so just imagine what all he will put into your wedding videography!)

This quote from our Q&A with Jason really sums it up for us- “They say a picture is worth a thousand words.  And it is!  But the video lets you know exactly what those words are.  Video is not a substitution for photography but instead a partner that complements it.  When you look at a photo from your wedding day of the groom crying during a first look or a first dance or a first married meal - we probably were recording video too and you'll be able to go back and remember the context of the moment which tends to let you relive all the feels from your wedding day.”

We couldn’t agree more, Jason! To get started, check out Bright & Gray Creative’s introduction video below.

Jumping into our Q&A, We asked Jason four questions to give you a little insight regarding videography.

Question 1: What is one major benefit of hiring a videographer?

“Not all videographers offer this service, but one of the things I offer on a wedding day is called the Digital Guestbook.  Similar to how guests might write messages in a guestbook upon arrival, I provide a short window of time for some of the wedding party and guests to share short messages to the bride and groom on their wedding day.  This is a really fun opportunity to capture the different personalities that are there as well as really sweet, funny and encouraging messages to share with the couple when they watch their films and look back over the years.  You never know what you're going to get (and sometimes it requires a lot of editing) but I always repurpose some of my favorites and include them in the highlight film to help narrate the day.”

This is such a FUN way that Jason makes the most of wedding videography. The way we see it- when you look back on this video (or digital guestbook) for years to come, how amazing will it be to actually see AND hear the voices of some of your favorite people from your wedding day? That is truly so special (and something that cannot be found in just photos alone!)

Question 2: What is your favorite wedding day moment to capture on film?

“The First Married Meal.  Often, a couple chooses to do a private meal in the bridal suite before being introduced at the reception.  It's an opportunity for the couple to be alone and eat before the craziness and fun at the reception occurs.  It's a really sweet time for the couple to kind of connect after the ceremony.  Often, that period of time will last from 15-30 minutes so whichever time it is, I usually pop in for about 5 of those minutes towards the end and get some footage of them having their first married meal together as well as have a brief conversation with them to capture their headspace and chat through the excitement of emotions for the day as they live in.  This is literally like a video time capsule and one of our couple's favorite moments to look back on during the years to come!”

We can see why this moment is Jason’s favorite- it is such a meaningful time, and one that’s not necessarily captured in photos. It is one of the only points during wedding day that you are alone with your new spouse (as a married couple!) where you can take a second to really process what just happened. You are finally married! Being able to look back and see the excitement in your own eyes and relive that blissful moment through video is incredibly priceless!

Question 3: What makes wedding videography special, compared to just having a photographer?

“They say a picture is worth a thousand words.  And it is!  But the video lets you know exactly what those words are.  Video is not a substitution for photography but instead a partner that complements it.  When you look at a photo from your wedding day of the groom crying during a first look or a first dance or a first married meal - we probably were recording video too and you'll be able to go back and remember the context of the moment which tends to let you relive all the feels from your wedding day.  Just in the last year, these are some of the comments we've received from some of our brides way after they received their films from us:  "I still watch my wedding video every week.   It's my favorite thing to look back on."   // "Oh my gosh wow!  We are speechless! This is my favorite thing from our day".

A lot of times we hear brides say that their wedding day was a blur. There is so much excitement leading up to your wedding, and admittedly there is a LOT going on once the big day finally comes. It can be so hard to take in every moment, but as Jason said, videography allows you to go deeper than just photos and truly relive those special moments. From hearing your husband’s reaction to seeing you during your first look, to watching your first kiss and hearing the crowd cheer, videography documents all the wedding feels from beginning to end!

Question 4: How would you describe your videography style?

“Our style is documentary.  We don't create moments, but instead let you live them and capture them as they unfold.  One of our favorite things is when we get asked back to film a family member of a past couple's wedding.  We've started being asked to do siblings, or cousins, and many other relatives who we've met through our brides and grooms.  Recently, we sat down with the sister of a bride who is now the bride herself and the mother of (both) brides was with us.  Mom looked at me and said "Jason, I loved your work at my (1st) daughter's wedding but I'll be honest;  I don't even remember you being there.  You were so easy going on the day that you were never in the way, I don't know how you got the footage you took."  And that's the goal - to capture your day without impacting it.   Every package I offer comes with a documentary of the best moments of the day.  Often families refer to it as raw footage, but it's not raw - it's certainly polished.  But it is raw because it's the full, raw moments as they occurred.   This helps me put together the highlight film because I shoot my absolute favorite shots from all of the best moments of the day, and craft it together in a pretty package for the family. It also gives as full a picture as possible of the entire day as it came together so you have the context we talked about in an earlier question.”

Wedding Videography is sometimes looked at as optional, but we hope that this blog post has helped you decide that it is definitely worth it. Being able to relive such an important day in your lives, down to the details, is such an incredible thing.
